SURF WOOD FOR GOOD

Free Bellyboard Hire

What started as an idea last year has finally come to fruition! From Monday 17th May 2021 we will be offering free wooden bellyboard rentals this summer as a positive alternative to cheap, often environmentally-toxic polystyrene bodyboards that are so often discarded on beaches in the South West.

Like many others we have seen a significant increase during recent summers of the daily discarding of cheap, disposable polystyrene bodyboards. After an average summer beach day, there are usually several polystyrene boards left behind by beach visitors, invariably dumped near refuse bins. These boards often break and crumble apart, ultimately disintegrating into thousands of pieces of marine plastic pollution.Multiply that by a few months and that’s suddenly hundreds of discarded, non-recyclable polystyrene boards.

Over 16,000 cheap polystyrene bodyboards are discarded on UK beaches annually

We think many visitors feel that they have little alternative than to buy a cheap bodyboard for their beach holiday, then to leave it behind once it breaks or they’re returning home after their holidays. We hope that by providing a free rental alternative, we can do our bit to offering a solution, and show holidaymakers that there’s a fun, sustainable and free alternative that they can enjoy instead.

The wooden bellyboard is a uniquely British board, fun and simple to ride even complete beginners can learn and have fun on these boards! There’s varying theories in terms of where the boards really originate, they've been around for over a century. Read up on a bit of the history of bellyboard here:>https://dickpearce.com/pages/history-of-bellyrider.

Up until a couple years ago, Cornwall was even the annual host of the World Bellyboard Championships. So we think this champions sustainability, Cornwall and the beautiful town we live and work in.

Working together with Jamie from Dick Pearce Bellyboards and Surfers Against Sewage, this rental project is intended to send out a positive message to beach users about the benefits of sustainability.

Dick Pearce also have their boards available to hire for FREE from numerous other Surf Wood for Good sites in the South West and beyond!

To hire a board for the day, visitors will need to pop along to the shop early (there’ll be a limit to how many boards are available), then enjoy a day of beach fun or a quick dip before returning the board at the end of the day/session. In accordance with the strictest hygiene measures, the boards will be cleaned and sterilised every day between hires.

So if you are in the area or near any other Surf Wood for Good sites grab a Bellyboard and enjoy one of life's simple pleasures :)

See you in the water
